Warehousing is an old concept but continues to change. Technology, modern warehouses, warehouse type retail stores, and the internet continue to shape and dictate developments in not only warehousing but transportation and distribution strategies. The internet has had a major influence on traditional warehousing. Internet based stores do not require physical buildings to sell their items. This has changed the buying patterns. The supplier no longer ships large quantities of goods but ships large numbers of small quantities of goods. Just in Time (JIT) techniques designed to improve service and reduce overhead have been on the decline. Overseas manufacturing has increased the distance between the manufacturer and the retailer. This has caused increased interruptions in the supply chain particularly with transportation services.
The direction and tracking of materials within the warehouse is coordinated by the WMS or Warehouse Management System. The WMS is a data based system and is used by the operators to increase productivity, efficiencies, control labor costs, and to maintain accurate inventories. Almost all warehouses are built for storage. Some facilities use a "cross dock" concept. This program coordinates the arrival of different products to be combined and loaded on one trailer for delivery. By blending cross dock with conventional storage, the warehouse can offer deliveries on a more predictable basis.
The goal of any warehouse operation is to offer outstanding customer service at an affordable rate. Most customers want a very high level of satisfaction. Their ideal provider offers outstanding service at a fixed cost. Most third party operators would like to offer gain sharing as a motivator. This allows both the provider and the client to share an incentive to reward improvement.
Combining warehousing with transportation will make your operation more attractive to customers. It becomes much easier to monitor shipments, critique performance, reduce costs, and control over/short, and damage claims.
The supply chain consists of several components. Technology and Transportation are increasing becoming more critical to the success of the chain. An effective organization will focus on three areas to optimize their supply chain. These areas are strategic planning, tactical decision making, and making sound operational decisions.
Strategic planning concerns the whole organization. The location and size of manufacturing locations, which suppliers to use, and what products are to be manufactured are crucial.
Tactical decision making will focus on cost benefits, preferred work methods, a purchasing strategy, cost effective transportation, and developing warehouse strategies that promote JIT inventory.
Sound operational decisions are essential for a successful venture. Everyday business decisions affect the profit and loss of the organization and could have a detrimental effect with your customers. One challenge facing supply chain companies is visibility throughout the network. Once information has been gathered it is just as important to make sound decisions with that information. Often times there are barriers that prevent the flow of this information. This is can be lessened by sharing the information with all parties and making real time decisions focused on consolidating all of the resources available. Changing business dynamics continue to affect supply and demand. A lot of companies spend a lot of time trying to predict demand.
A key capability for a provider is the ability to respond to changing demand and be able to respond rapidly. Distribution networks need to transition from a supply chain driven by forecasts to a demand driven model.
Responsiveness and collaboration are essential elements for a successful supply chain. Collaboration is imperative for a responsive supply network. Having the processes in place promotes a shared commitment to resolving most issues that arise in the supply chain.
